In a move that underscores its commitment to supporting Metro Manila’s economic growth, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by Manuel V. Pangilinan, has officially energized the ASEANA 115 kV–34.5 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Substation in Parañaque City. This new smart substation is designed to deliver a more stable and reliable power supply to ASEANA City and nearby commercial and business centers.

As one of the country’s fastest-growing business districts, ASEANA City is home to a cluster of high-demand establishments, including shopping malls, hotels, corporate offices, and mixed-use developments. To meet the rising energy needs of this dynamic area, Meralco has ramped up its efforts through the commissioning of this state-of-the-art facility.

The ASEANA GIS Substation features an 83-megavolt-ampere (MVA) power transformer, indoor GIS switchgears at 115-kV and 34.5-kV levels, a 14.4 MVAr capacitor bank, and a 1.2-ohm neutral reactor. Alongside the construction of a dedicated GIS building, the substation is equipped with advanced protection and control systems that improve both safety and operational efficiency.

“This project reflects Meralco’s forward-looking approach to infrastructure development,” said Froilan J. Savet, Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks. “By energizing the ASEANA Substation, we are not only strengthening our grid capacity, but also directly supporting the evolving energy demands of key economic hubs in southern Metro Manila.”

More than just expanding power capacity, the ASEANA substation introduces smart grid technologies that allow for automated monitoring, enhanced switching flexibility during contingencies, and system-wide efficiency improvements. It also eases the load on the existing PAGCOR-1 transformer banks, helping reduce potential power interruptions in the area.

With a projected reduction of 373,392 kilowatt-hours in system losses, the substation brings both operational savings and cost benefits to customers. Among the major establishments set to benefit from the project are Ayala Malls Manila Bay, Seda Manila Bay, the K1 Center by Prestige Bay, and several hotels, corporate towers, and residential complexes.

The energization of the ASEANA GIS Substation is part of Meralco’s broader goal of building a smarter, more resilient, and future-ready grid. It demonstrates a clear alignment with the nation’s broader agenda of creating infrastructure that supports sustained economic growth and development.

As Parañaque’s skyline continues to evolve, the city can now count on a stronger and smarter power backbone to fuel its progress.
