In a bold move to supercharge energy education and innovation in the Philippines, Meralco Power Academy (MPA) and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) have officially joined forces.

The two institutions sealed the deal with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed at Meralco’s headquarters in Pasig City—marking the beginning of a promising partnership aimed at shaping the next generation of energy experts in the country.

Present during the signing were top officials from both sides, including MPA Executive Director Ian Chester V. Colorina, Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Edgardo V. Carasig, Meralco Executive Vice President and MPA President Ronnie L. Aperocho, MSU-IIT Chancellor Alizedney M. Ditucalan, and Professors Moheddin Sumagayan and Noel Estoperez from MSU-IIT.

The partnership is all about action. Think specialized training, immersive internships, and industry-academia collaboration that’s actually hands-on. MPA and MSU-IIT are rolling out initiatives that go beyond the classroom—giving students real-world exposure to the energy industry and jumpstarting their careers even before graduation.

“This collaboration is more than just an agreement—it reflects a shared vision of building a future-ready energy workforce,” said Aperocho, himself a proud MSU alumnus. “Together with MSU-IIT, we strive to equip aspiring engineers and scientists with the skills and knowledge to drive the Philippines toward a more sustainable energy landscape.”

From co-developing curricula for advanced programs in renewable energy and nuclear science, to organizing big events like the Mindanao leg of the Young Engineers and Scientists Summit, the partnership is designed to fuel a culture of research, innovation, and professional growth.

MSU-IIT Chancellor Ditucalan highlighted how this type of collaboration bridges a long-standing gap between schools and the energy industry. “In the past, higher education institutions and industry were moving in different directions. The solution is to strengthen the collaboration—not just for workforce development, but also in research and development,” he emphasized.

With professional lectures, joint research conferences, and shared lab projects in the pipeline, both Meralco and MSU-IIT are clearly on a mission: to build a powerhouse of energy professionals who can lead the country through its energy transition.

Bottom line? This isn’t just a partnership on paper—it’s a game-changing alliance for a brighter, smarter, and more sustainable energy future in the Philippines.
