In a strong show of support for the education sector, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited Epifanio Delos Santos Elementary School (EDSES) in Malate, Manila, on Monday, June 16, to mark the official opening of classes for the 2025–2026 academic year.
This school year signals a significant shift, as public schools across the country return to the traditional June-to-March academic calendar—an important milestone following several years of adjustments brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Classes for the current school year are set to conclude on March 31, 2026.
At EDSES, President Marcos personally took part in classroom activities, joining Grade 1 students for an interactive reading session using flashcards. The President not only guided the young learners but also answered their questions, creating an atmosphere of engagement and encouragement. The visit emphasized his administration’s message of inclusivity and support for foundational learning.
Following the session, the President toured additional Grade 1 classrooms before heading to the principal’s office, where he was briefed on the school’s security protocols, including CCTV coverage and other safety measures in place for students and staff.
This visit comes as the Department of Education (DepEd) projects around 27 million enrollees from preschool to senior high school for School Year 2025–2026. The Marcos administration has reiterated its commitment to ensuring public schools are safe, adequately resourced, and fully prepared to welcome back students under the reinstated school calendar.
The event reflects a broader national effort to stabilize the education system post-pandemic and prioritize the well-being and academic development of Filipino learners.
