In a move that brings significant relief to students and their families, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has officially rolled out a 50% fare discount for students riding the MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2. The enhanced discount, which took effect today, is part of the government’s broader initiative to ease the financial burden on Filipino families as the school year begins.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced the development at the LRT-2 Antipolo Station, emphasizing that the program directly responds to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to help students cope with rising daily expenses.
“President Marcos instructed us to increase the student discount on all major train lines. From the previous 20%, we’ve raised it to 50%,” Secretary Dizon said. “This is a major help for families, especially parents struggling to support their children’s education.”
He noted that the savings from the discounted fares could go toward other school-related expenses such as projects, daily allowances, and additional school supplies.
The impact of this program will be especially felt along the LRT-2 line, which serves numerous universities in Manila’s University Belt, making it a critical route for thousands of commuting students.
“This benefit goes straight into the pockets of students and their families. It’s direct, tangible help,” Dizon added.
To avail of the discount, students need to purchase a single-journey ticket at station counters, as the 50% discount is not yet integrated with Beep card payments. The discount applies daily, including weekends and holidays, and is available to all students—from elementary to post-graduate level.
The fare reduction will remain in effect until 2028, giving students and their families a multi-year cushion against transportation costs.
In the words of Secretary Dizon: “This is more than just a fare discount—it’s a show of support to every Filipino family investing in education.”
