Residents across parts of Mindanao were jolted Friday night, October 10, after a powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for several provinces.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake occurred at 7:12 p.m., with its epicenter located 36 kilometers southeast of Manay, Davao Oriental. The tremor had a depth of 10 kilometers, indicating a shallow quake capable of causing significant shaking.

Initial reports show Intensity IV felt in Davao City and Bislig City, Surigao del Sur, while instrumental readings also recorded Intensity IV in several areas, including Cotabato, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental, Davao de Oro, Sarangani, and Southern Leyte.

PHIVOLCS warned that the quake may generate tsunami waves exceeding one meter, especially in enclosed bays and coastal areas. “Destructive tsunami is expected with life-threatening wave heights,” the agency said in its advisory.

Residents living along the coasts of Davao Oriental, Surigao del Sur, and Surigao del Norte were strongly advised to evacuate immediately to higher grounds or move farther inland as a precaution.

Authorities also urged boat owners in affected areas to secure their vessels and move away from the shore, while those already at sea are advised to stay in deep waters until further notice.

The first tsunami waves were expected to arrive between 7:12 p.m. and 9:12 p.m., with the possibility of aftershocks and wave activity continuing for several hours.

Local disaster councils across Mindanao are now on high alert, closely monitoring developments as residents brace for aftershocks and possible tsunami impacts.
