A Brighter September: Meralco Rates Expected To Decrease

This September is looking a little brighter for Meralco customers, who can expect to see lower electricity rates.

Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco's Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications, shared that there are strong signs pointing to a drop in the generation charge, which is the biggest part of your electric bill.

"We are seeing a possible decrease in the overall electricity rate which we hope will help our customers," Zaldarriaga stated.

The main reason for this good news is the stronger Philippine Peso against the US Dollar. This has helped lower the costs for Meralco's suppliers, many of whom have dollar-denominated expenses. The savings from the stronger Peso are expected to more than make up for the costs Meralco is now recovering for terminated contracts with San Miguel Global Power, which the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) recently approved.

"Overall, we are optimistic that the reduction in generation charge will be able to offset increases in other bill components," Zaldarriaga added.

This anticipated rate reduction comes as a welcome relief for households and businesses alike. Meralco will announce the final rates in the coming days.
