Tennis star Alex Eala and volleyball standout Bryan Bagunas have been chosen as flag-bearers for Team Philippines at the opening ceremony of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 9, 2025.
The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) made the announcement on Tuesday, citing the athletes’ international impact and ability to inspire as key reasons behind the selection. They will lead the parade of Filipino athletes during the opening ceremony.
Why Eala and Bagunas?
Alex Eala has had a breakthrough season in 2025, reaching a career-high ranking in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) — the highest ever achieved by a Filipina — and turning in strong performances in major international tournaments.
Bryan Bagunas has been a key figure in Philippine volleyball, helping the men’s national team achieve notable victories in international competitions, including appearances at the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship.
Team Philippines’ Delegation
The 2025 SEA Games will feature one of the largest Philippine delegations in history, with roughly 1,600 athletes competing across 50 sports. For the opening ceremony, about 300 members of the team are expected to take part in the parade, although this number could be adjusted due to local conditions in Thailand.
Athletes will wear specially designed national uniforms that showcase traditional Filipino weaving and the national flag, symbolizing unity and national pride.
What to Watch For
With Eala and Bagunas leading the way, Team Philippines highlights both individual excellence and team strength. Fans will be watching closely as the country competes in 574 events across 50 sports, aiming for strong performances and a memorable Games.
