Bangsamoro Elections Postponed To 2026 Following Supreme Court Ruling

The Bangsamoro Government is moving quickly to address a major shift in its timeline for regional elections following a Supreme Court decision on two key laws.

Chief Minister Abdulraof A. Macacua issued a statement confirming that the Supreme Court has declared Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 77 and Bangsamoro Autonomy Act No. 58 unconstitutional and invalid. This ruling has a direct and significant consequence: it moves the date for the first BARMM Parliamentary Elections from October 13, 2025, to a new date no later than March 31, 2026.

“We respect and acknowledge the decision of the Supreme Court,” Macacua said, affirming the government’s adherence to the ruling.

In full compliance with the Court’s directive, the Bangsamoro Government will immediately work on enacting a new redistricting law—one that ensures meaningful representation, advances equitable development, and stands firmly on constitutional grounds for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

While the delay is a disappointment for many, the Chief Minister framed it as an opportunity. The extra time, he noted, “allows us to ensure that our inaugural elections will be conducted with full constitutional and legal fidelity, thereby safeguarding the political rights and aspirations of the Bangsamoro people.”

The government is calling on its partners, stakeholders, and the entire Bangsamoro community to “remain united and steadfast” as they navigate this challenge. The commitment remains to ensure that the first parliamentary elections are built on the strongest possible legal foundation, marking an enduring step towards peace, stability, and a stronger Bangsamoro.
