Beermen Too Hot To Handle: San Miguel Outguns Meralco In Golden PBA Throwback Night

On a night filled with nostalgia, vintage jerseys, and legends gracing the court, the San Miguel Beermen reminded everyone why they’ve long been a PBA powerhouse. They weren’t just there to party—they came to play. And play they did, steamrolling the Meralco Bolts with a 110-98 win at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum during the PBA’s golden anniversary celebration on Wednesday night.

It was a rematch of their Philippine Cup finals showdown—only this time, the Beermen weren’t letting anything slide. June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez were simply in beast mode. Fajardo dropped 28 points, pulled down 10 boards, and dished out 4 assists, while Perez went full offensive mode with 29 markers, including a booming four-point play and three treys.

The duo was just unstoppable.

Add in Jeron Teng’s 11 points and solid contributions from Rodney Brondial, Marcio Lassiter, and Juami Tiongson, and it was clear: SMB came ready to dominate. This win marked their second straight in the conference, while also handing Meralco their first L after a 2-0 start.

The night had everything—festivities, throwback fits (shoutout to those classic ‘80s SMB whites and the Bolts’ orange MICAA-era kits), and even a center court photo-op with legends like Jimmy Noblezada and Boy Cabahug. But once the ball was tipped, it was all business for the Beermen.

By halftime, San Miguel had already carved out a 52-38 lead. But to Meralco’s credit, they came swinging in the third, with Chris Newsome (who had a stellar 27-point game) leading a furious rally that cut the gap to just three points heading into the fourth.

But that was as close as they’d get.

Fajardo crushed a dunk to halt the momentum, and then Perez and Tiongson nailed back-to-back triples that ballooned the lead back to double digits. From there, SMB never looked back.

The win not only gave the Beermen a sweet taste of revenge after their finals loss to Meralco—it also gave fans a vintage-flavored reminder: no matter the era, San Miguel knows how to win.

The golden anniversary celebration continues Friday night with a star-studded gala at Solaire North, featuring the league’s 50 greatest players. But after this game, you might want to pencil in Fajardo and Perez for that list too—if they’re not there already.
