BJMP Heroes Honored On Araw Ng Kagitingan After Foiling Ambush In Paranaque

In a powerful reminder that courage doesn’t always wear a cape, four personnel from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) were honored on Araw ng Kagitingan for their bravery during a daring ambush last April 7 in Parañaque.
The incident unfolded as they were transporting a Chinese Person Deprived of Liberty (PDL) back to the Parañaque City Jail-Male Dormitory after a court hearing in Makati. Out of nowhere, two vehicles—a black sedan and a Mitsubishi Xpander—intercepted their BJMP transport vehicle along CAVITEX. Then came the gunfire.
Despite being under attack, the BJMP team stood their ground. One of the personnel sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder but continued to protect the PDL and their fellow officers. With the help of the Parañaque PNP and a swift hot pursuit operation, six armed suspects were later arrested. Their mission? A brazen attempt to “rescue” the PDL, allegedly a high-profile detainee linked to criminal activities across Metro Manila.
BJMP Chief Jail Director Ruel S. Rivera personally awarded the four personnel with the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting and Medalya ng Kagalingan—symbols of valor and excellence under fire.
“Hindi natinag sa panganib. Hindi umurong sa tungkulin.” That was the unspoken oath that day. And on Araw ng Kagitingan, a day that commemorates bravery, these modern-day heroes showed us what that truly means. They weren’t on a battlefield—but make no mistake, they were at war with danger, and they came out standing tall.
In the line of duty, there’s no such thing as “off hours.” And thanks to the alertness, quick response, and unwavering dedication of the BJMP personnel, not only was a serious threat neutralized—but peace, order, and justice were upheld.
