BOC Chief Nepomuceno Apologizes Over Online Duty And Tax Calculator, Vows System Upgrade For Transparency

Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno has acknowledged public concerns regarding the agency’s Online Duty and Tax Calculator, apologizing for the confusion it may have caused to those who used the tool to estimate their shipment dues.
In a statement, Nepomuceno explained that while the calculator was intended to guide the public, it only provided rough estimates and did not fully account for all lawful charges under the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) and related regulations. This, he said, may have led to discrepancies between the calculator’s estimates and the official assessments.
“To avoid similar situations in the future, I have directed that the calculator be temporarily removed until enhancements are completed,” Nepomuceno said. He added that the new version of the tool will provide a clearer, more detailed breakdown of applicable charges and will be regularly updated to reflect prevailing rates.
The commissioner also commended actress Bela Padilla, who publicly raised concerns over her shipment’s charges, for voicing her feedback calmly and professionally. “Constructive feedback like this helps us strengthen transparency and better serve the public,” he stressed.
Nepomuceno assured the public of the BOC’s commitment to transparency, accuracy, and continuous improvement in its processes. “I apologize for any confusion this may have caused and thank the public for their feedback, which helps us serve better,” he said.
