Bong Quinto Sparks Bolts' Hot Start With Grit, Guts, And A Killer Corner Three

Bong Quinto may not always grab the headlines, but when Meralco needed someone to step up and steady the ship, he didn’t hesitate. With the Bolts looking to defend their PBA Philippine Cup crown, Quinto came through clutch—twice in one week—to set the tone for what’s looking like another promising run.

“I just needed to step up in other aspects of my game,” Quinto shared humbly, after being named the PBA Press Corps–Pilipinas Live Player of the Week for the season-ending conference. That’s a title well-earned after he averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.0 assists from April 4 to 6.

And it’s not just the stats—it’s the timing.

Against Converge, Meralco looked dead in the water early, trailing by 20 points in the first period. But Quinto’s clutch corner three helped ignite a furious comeback, capped by Chris Newsome’s game-winner to seal a wild 91-89 victory. A gritty win like that? That’s how championship DNA shows up.

Then came Terrafirma—and Meralco came in guns blazing. Quinto set the tone early again, knocking down a four-pointer and a triple to kickstart a wire-to-wire 118-80 blowout. That 38-point rout? It’s now the most lopsided win in Meralco franchise history.

Not bad for a guy who’s been working on his outside shot every chance he gets.

“I’ve really been trying to improve on things I’m not comfortable with in practice,” said the 30-year-old Letran alum, known more for slashing and post-ups earlier in his career. “I want to be reliable in other areas.”

Quinto’s evolution isn’t just about scoring. He defends, he passes, and he brings that steady veteran presence Meralco needs. It’s also his second Player of the Week award this season—the last one came when the Bolts also opened the Commissioner’s Cup with a 2-0 record. Coincidence? Maybe not.

While CJ Perez (San Miguel), Zavier Lucero (Magnolia), and Kurt Reyson (Meralco) were all in the running, it was Quinto’s all-around impact and clutch factor that stood out.

If this is how Meralco is starting their campaign, and Quinto keeps firing on all cylinders, the rest of the league better watch out—the Bolts are juiced up and ready to shock again.
