In a significant step toward de-escalation, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to an emergency ceasefire following high-level discussions with Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. The agreement is set to take effect at midnight on July 28, 2025, marking what Hun Manet described as a “brilliant result” of their meeting.
The ceasefire, which will be implemented without preconditions, aims to immediately reduce tensions and restore peace and security along the border areas where military encounters have recently intensified. To support the ceasefire, both sides agreed to hold an informal meeting of their respective rural military commanders at 7:00 a.m. on July 29. Further military coordination meetings, potentially under the leadership of an ASEAN chief, will follow if mutually agreed upon.
In addition, Cambodia will host a General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on August 4, which is expected to serve as a formal venue for addressing broader security and cooperation issues between the two nations.
Prime Minister Hun Manet extended his gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who initiated and hosted the dialogue. He also acknowledged the support of former U.S. President Donald Trump, whose involvement through the United States as a co-host was instrumental in facilitating the agreement. The Chinese government was also thanked for its continued encouragement and active participation in promoting dialogue and supporting the ceasefire.
“This agreement marks a key foundation for building mutual trust and moving toward the normalization of relations,” Hun Manet said, expressing optimism about the road ahead.
The ceasefire comes amid heightened concerns from the international community over the risk of prolonged conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. The swift consensus achieved reflects a shared desire to prioritize stability and peace in the region.
