Cavite Lawmaker Cuts Ties; Calls For Investigation Into Speaker Of The House

Cavite 4th District Representative Kiko Barzaga has announced his resignation from the National Unity Party (NUP) and the House majority bloc. In a move that sent ripples through the political landscape, Barzaga declared he will now sit as either an independent or a member of the minority.
Barzaga’s decision comes on the heels of what he described as a betrayal of trust and internal party conflict. He emphatically denied claims that he was gathering signatures for a plot to oust Speaker Martin Romualdez, a rumor he said was spread by someone within his own party.
"The conflict emerged last night when I was informed that someone from within my party stated that I am gathering signatures to oust the speakership of Martin Romualdez," Barzaga said in a statement. He added that he decided to leave the party for his personal safety, as the people who were against him would still be in the party regardless of his choice.
But Barzaga didn’t stop there. He is now calling for an investigation into the very person he previously supported as a result of his party's instruction: Speaker Romualdez. Barzaga claims the Speaker should be the first to be investigated for alleged anomalies in flood control funds. While he was hesitant to elaborate, Barzaga stated he has personal knowledge of the Speaker's involvement, particularly during the time Romualdez served as caretaker for Barzaga's district after the death of his father on April 27, 2024.
In a Facebook post, Barzaga detailed the events that led to his resignation, including what he says was a misinterpretation of a recommendation he made during a party meeting. He explained that he suggested to a party official that they should no longer be defending the reputation of the House of Representatives on certain issues, as it was only furthering the damage towards its own reputation. Barzaga said the more the House defends itself and those involved in alleged anomalies, the more it makes it seem like we are complicit as a party.
Barzaga's departure from the majority bloc and his direct call for an investigation of the Speaker marks a dramatic turn of events, setting the stage for potential political tremors in the coming days.
