CEBU CITY — Rescue operations continue at the Binaliw landfill after a massive landslide buried workers under tons of garbage on Thursday afternoon.

As of Friday morning, one person has been confirmed dead — a 22-year-old woman — while dozens remain missing, according to Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival. Twelve others have been pulled from the debris and taken to nearby hospitals, with some in critical condition.

A total of 333 responders, including local disaster teams, fire brigades, police, and medical personnel, have been deployed to the site. Mayor Archival said the city government is providing ongoing support to the injured and the family of the deceased, including medical care and burial assistance.

“Continuous care is being provided to all hospitalized victims to address their medical needs. The City Government is also extending burial assistance and necessary support to the family of the deceased,” he said.

Search and rescue teams are combing through unstable piles of trash with heavy equipment and lighting. Tents and shaded areas have been set up nearby to provide shelter for the families of those affected.

The collapse happened at the Prime Waste Solutions landfill, which employs about 110 workers. Authorities are working closely with the facility operator to locate the missing and determine the cause of the landslide.

Families anxiously await news as responders navigate dangerous conditions amid concerns about the stability of the remaining garbage mound. Verified updates are expected as operations continue throughout the weekend.
