MANILA — The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has confirmed that it filed a case against Cavite Rep. Francisco Barzaga before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office in connection with the violent incident that erupted last September 21 in Mendiola and Recto, Manila.

CIDG Acting Director MGen. Alexander Morico II said the complaint stems from the group’s ongoing investigation into the Mendiola disturbance, which involved dozens of protesters and law enforcement personnel. While he did not elaborate on Barzaga’s specific role in the clash, Morico emphasized that pursuing such high-impact cases forms part of the agency’s mandate to address crimes “of great magnitude.”

According to the CIDG, Barzaga is among the 97 individuals previously charged for their alleged involvement in the Mendiola incident. Authorities also revealed that a separate case was filed against him in connection with another protest action held in Forbes Park, where participants reportedly demonstrated against the government.

The CIDG’s move highlights the agency’s intensified efforts to hold accountable those linked to large-scale public disturbances. The investigation continues as prosecutors evaluate the evidence filed in both cases.

Barzaga has yet to issue a statement regarding the CIDG’s latest filing.
