CJ Cansino Shines Bright: Meralco Guard Named PBA Player Of The Week

CJ Cansino is proving that his sophomore season in the PBA is no slump year. The Meralco Bolts shooting guard delivered a standout performance across three games in just five days, earning him the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week honors for October 15 to 19.
Cansino averaged 15.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks during that stretch, capping it off with a career-high 23 points and four blocks in Meralco’s thrilling 78–76 win over Magnolia last Sunday at the Ynares Center in Montalban.
Before that, he dropped 18 points and two steals in their convincing 89–75 victory over Barangay Ginebra, and contributed six points and four rebounds in just 16 minutes during the Bolts’ 105–96 triumph over Blackwater earlier in the week.
“I’m happy to be given this kind of role,” Cansino said. “Pero sa sistema ni coach Nenad (Vucinic), walang fixed role — kung sino ‘yung mainit sa game, siya ‘yung binibigyan. Nasaktuhan lang na maganda ‘yung nilalaro ko sa offense nitong mga last games.”
Meralco head coach Luigi Trillo praised Cansino’s hard work during the offseason, which he said is now clearly paying off.
“He really put in the work. I think he gained around 12 pounds of muscle. More than the stats, what makes me proud is how he’s defending,” said Trillo. “Last conference, teams used to attack him. This time, he’s holding the fort.”
Cansino edged out strong contenders — teammate Chris Newsome and San Miguel’s Marcio Lassiter and CJ Perez — to clinch the weekly honor from the PBA Press Corps, composed of sportswriters from major print and online outlets covering the league.
With his confidence and consistency rising, Cansino is quickly becoming one of Meralco’s most reliable weapons — a young player coming into his own under the bright lights of the PBA’s 50th season.
