San Sebastian Stags head coach Roberts “Rob” Labagala has broken his silence on the challenges his team is facing this NCAA season — not just in competition, but off the court as well.

In an interview aired by GMA Network, Labagala spoke candidly about how his players continue to push forward despite financial struggles that have affected their daily routines and morale.

“That’s our status. If you can only realize and put yourself in our position, how our players are fighting for it going into the game with the baggage na meron kami. We play with heart,” he said.

Labagala explained that while the school has remained supportive, some financial issues involving their team sponsor have made things more difficult.

“The school is supporting us, nando’n naman but syempre limited. We have a sponsor kasi so our sponsor right now, sad to say, weren’t able to deliver. I hope na sana ma-bless siya kasi mabe-bless din naman kami,” he added.

Sources close to the team said the players have been managing with limited resources and often rely on one another — even on their coach — for small necessities.
“Yun nga, hiram-hiram nalang kami ganyan, si Coach Rob nagbibigay pa rin samin nang pantustos, pero naiintindihan namin kung di siya makapagbigay kasi may pamilya pa rin yan,” shared one player.

Following the viral interview, San Sebastian College–Recoletos released an official statement through its Office of the College President to address the issue.

“We are aware of the recent interview aired on GMA in which our Head Coach mentioned that the basketball coaches had not received their salaries for several months. Out of respect for the truth, I wish to clarify that all our coaches and staff have been receiving their monthly salaries faithfully and on time,” said Fr. Rafael B. Pacson, OAR, College President and Superintendent of Recoletos Educational Institutions in the Philippines.

Fr. Pacson emphasized that the school stands by its values of truth and compassion, quoting St. Augustine’s reminder: “Charity leads us to the truth, and truth leads us to charity.”
He also called on the community to remain united despite differing views, saying, “We hold our coaches, athletes, and staff in high regard. Together, we share one mission: to form minds and hearts into stewards of creation and builders of communion.”

As the Stags continue their NCAA campaign, both Coach Labagala and the school’s leadership are hopeful that the challenges will bring renewed faith, stronger teamwork, and deeper unity within the San Sebastian family.
