It’s truly the end of an era—but not goodbye. Gregg Popovich, the legendary figure who’s been the heart and soul of the San Antonio Spurs for nearly three decades, is officially stepping down as head coach. But don’t worry, Spurs fans—Coach Pop isn’t going far. He’s taking on a new role as President of Basketball Operations, where he’ll continue to shape the future of the franchise he helped build.

In a heartfelt statement, Popovich said, “While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach. I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me.”

Pop’s NBA résumé is the stuff of legends: 1,422 regular-season wins (the most in league history), five NBA championships, and a career that’s spanned 37 years—35 of them in San Antonio. He’s not just a coach; he’s a basketball institution.

Spurs chairman Peter J. Holt echoed the feelings of so many when he said, “Coach Pop’s extraordinary impact on our family, San Antonio, the Spurs and the game of basketball is profound… He is truly one-of-one as a person, leader and coach.”

Even rising superstar Victor Wembanyama, who had the chance to be coached by Pop in his rookie year, penned a touching message: “Coach, I don’t think I can ever say thank you enough… It was an absolute honor to be a part of your 29 years head coach journey, and I know that you will keep inspiring everybody around you in this new adventure.”

As for the future? The Spurs have announced Mitch Johnson as their new head coach—a natural progression, as he’s been groomed within the system and knows the culture inside out.

So while the sideline may look different next season, the Spurs’ identity remains firmly rooted in Popovich’s legacy. He’s just traded the clipboard for the conference room—but make no mistake, the influence of Coach Pop will still be felt on the court and beyond.
