Authorities in Central Visayas are raising alarms after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB 7) identified at least 70 sinkholes scattered across northern Cebu.
San Remigio topped the list with 40 sinkholes, the highest in the region. Officials say the sinkholes were largely caused by extreme ground shaking combined with the area’s limestone terrain, which makes it more susceptible to sudden collapses.
Residents are being urged to avoid the identified sinkhole areas as monitoring and safety inspections continue. The DENR-MGB 7 emphasized that vigilance is crucial, particularly in communities built on vulnerable limestone formations.
Authorities continue to assess the situation and warn that additional sinkholes may appear if ground conditions remain unstable.
