Department of Justice (DOJ) spokesperson and Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano provided an update on Thursday, August 7, regarding the ongoing efforts to recover and identify human remains possibly linked to the high-profile case of the missing sabungeros.
Speaking to reporters, Clavano confirmed that divers recently retrieved skeletal remains—including a skull with teeth, various bones, and pieces of clothing—from Taal Lake, the same location previously pointed to as a possible dumping site for the missing individuals. The Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) have already verified that the remains are of human origin.
To determine whether these remains belong to any of the missing cockfighting enthusiasts, the DOJ has formally requested the expertise of forensic pathologist Dr. Raquel Fortun, chair of the Pathology Department at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. Dr. Fortun is expected to conduct a thorough forensic examination.
Clavano emphasized that the investigation remains in the evaluation stage. “At this point, prosecutors are carefully assessing the evidence and affidavits submitted,” he explained. “There are only two possible directions—either the case is returned for further evidence gathering, or it proceeds to a preliminary investigation.”
He made it clear that out of respect for due process and the sensitivity of the matter, the department will not release the names of persons involved or suspected until the case formally advances to the preliminary investigation phase. “We’re aware of the public interest, but we must preserve the integrity of the case,” Clavano added.
The missing sabungeros case has drawn national attention, not only for the mysterious disappearance of several individuals but also for its implications on law enforcement and the illegal operations linked to e-sabong.
As forensic analysis moves forward, the DOJ has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a thorough, evidence-based approach in pursuit of justice for the victims and their families.
