LOS ANGELES, CA — The world is mourning the loss of a conservation giant: Dr. Jane Goodall, the legendary ethologist and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), has died. She was 91.
The Jane Goodall Institute confirmed her passing this morning, stating that Dr. Goodall died peacefully in her sleep while in Los Angeles for her speaking tour in the United States.
Dr. Goodall’s life and work were transformative, leaving an indelible mark on both science and global conservation efforts.
A Groundbreaking Life of Discovery
In 1960, a then-young Dr. Goodall stepped into the Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania and began what would become the world’s longest-running study of wild chimpanzees, a project that continues to this day. Her patient, immersive observations redefined humankind’s relationship with the animal kingdom, famously demonstrating that chimpanzees use and make tools—a behavior once thought exclusive to humans.
Her discoveries fundamentally altered our understanding of chimpanzees, revealing their complex social structures, individual personalities, and deep emotional lives.
Legacy of Hope and Action
Beyond the groundbreaking science, Dr. Goodall transitioned into a tireless global advocate, touring nearly 300 days a year well into her 90s to spread her message of hope.
In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) to ensure the continuation of the Gombe research and to pioneer her unique approach to conservation: community-centered initiatives that link the welfare of local people with the protection of wildlife and the environment.
Perhaps her most expansive legacy is Roots & Shoots, JGI’s international environmental and humanitarian youth program. Active in 75 countries, the program empowers young people to become changemakers in their communities, providing Dr. Goodall with her enduring reason for hope for the future.
Dr. Goodall inspired countless people around the world to embrace curiosity, compassion, and the power of individual action.
The Jane Goodall Institute is asking supporters, partners, and friends to remember Dr. Goodall and continue her mission. Personal remembrances and donations can be made by visiting JaneGoodall.org/RememberingJane.
