Duterte Waives Appearance As ICC Prepares Ruling

Former President Rodrigo Duterte, currently detained at the Hague Penitentiary Institution, has waived his right to personally appear before the International Criminal Court (ICC) as it prepares to read its judgment on his appeal for interim release this Friday, November 28.

Duterte has been in custody since March 12, 2025, five days after the ICC issued a warrant for his arrest on March 7. He is facing crimes against humanity charges tied to his controversial war on drugs, including over 49 counts of murder and attempted murder dating back to his time as Davao City mayor and later as president.

In a formal waiver submitted on November 25, Duterte informed the tribunal that he would not attend the session and that his counsel, Atty. Nicholas Kaufman, will represent him during the judgment reading.

As the ICC gears up to deliver its ruling in open court, Duterte remains behind bars—awaiting the outcome from his cell while his legal team prepares to face the judges on his behalf.
