The tragic count of those lost in Tuesday's magnitude 6.9 earthquake continues to climb, with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) confirming on Thursday that 72 people have died.

All of the confirmed fatalities, according to the NDRRMC's 6 a.m. situation report, were in the Central Visayas region. The powerful quake severely shook Bogo City, Cebu, and surrounding provinces, leaving a significant trail of devastation.

The disaster response agency is also actively working to verify reports of 294 injured individuals, all within the same region. The human toll is stark, and the work of aid and rescue is far from over.

Beyond the immediate casualties, the quake has upended the lives of many thousands of families. A total of 47,221 families across 53 barangays in Central Visayas have been affected. As of today, roughly 4,000 families are still relying on aid outside of their homes, with evacuation centers remaining active to provide shelter and support.

The damage to property is also considerable: 597 homes in Region 7 have been damaged, with 96 houses completely destroyed and 501 sustaining partial damage.

The NDRRMC is still assessing the full financial impact of the disaster, noting that figures for damage to vital infrastructure and agriculture have yet to be finalized. As the cleanup and recovery efforts continue, the nation is watching closely as the Central Visayas deals with the aftermath of this powerful natural disaster.
