The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) kicked off its 2024-2025 All-Filipino Conference semifinals with a bang, and guess who stole the show? None other than Eli Soyud.
Akari turned to Soyud’s hot hands to pull off a massive upset against the red-hot Choco Mucho, snapping the Flying Titans’ nine-game winning streak in a five-set thriller—20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14—at the Ynares Center in Antipolo last Saturday.
Soyud was on fire, dropping a career-high 34 points—27 coming from attacks and an incredible seven kill blocks—to lead the Chargers to a stunning comeback win. That dominant performance earned her the PVL Press Corps Player of the Week award for March 25 to 29, presented by Pilipinas Live.
Her scoring explosion also made history, ranking sixth all-time for single-game points by a local player since the league’s inception in 2017. But despite her monster numbers, the 29-year-old Adamson University product made sure to credit her teammates.
“Lahat kami lumaban. Everyone was communicating, giving input on what to do. So for me, hindi pwedeng ma-waste lahat ng efforts ng bawat isa,” Soyud said.
“Kung hindi kami lalaban, walang mangyayari sa’min. Binuhos na namin lahat para walang panghihinayang—and buti naman natuto kami.”
From playing in the shadows of bigger names to becoming Akari’s go-to scorer, Soyud’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring.
“Ito na ‘yung time ko. Nabibigyan na ako ng playing time, kaya gusto ko rin na hindi ‘yun masayang,” she added.
“Dapat i-grab ko itong opportunity na ‘to para sa career ko—para mapatunayan na kaya ko pa talaga.”
Now, she’s on a mission to bring Akari back to the PVL Finals. The Chargers have two big battles ahead—against five-peat-seeking Creamline on April 1 at the Philsports Arena and Petro Gazz on April 3 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Can Soyud and Akari keep the momentum going and punch their ticket to the Finals? Buckle up, PVL fans—this ride is just getting started.
