Enrile, Gigi Reyes, And Napoles Cleared In P172-M PDAF Graft Case
Sandiganbayan via Zoom
Former Senate President and now Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, his former chief of staff Jessica “Gigi” Reyes, and businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles have been acquitted by the Sandiganbayan in connection with the ₱172-million Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel scam.
In its decision, the Sandiganbayan Special Third Division, chaired by Justice Ronald Moreno, cleared the three of 15 counts of graft, citing the prosecution’s failure to prove their guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The court also ruled that no civil liability or fine would be imposed.
The ruling stemmed from allegations that Enrile’s PDAF was funneled into bogus non-government organizations (NGOs) allegedly linked to Napoles, who was accused of masterminding the pork barrel scam that rocked Philippine politics in the early 2010s.
Inside the courtroom, emotions ran high as Reyes reportedly broke down in tears after hearing the verdict, which also cleared her long-time boss, Enrile.
The acquittal marks a significant development in the long-running PDAF controversy — one of the country’s biggest corruption scandals — and comes after years of legal battles involving high-profile lawmakers and government officials.
