Erik Spoelstra, the longtime head coach of the Miami Heat, is set to take over as the head coach of the USA men’s national basketball team. He is expected to succeed Steve Kerr and will lead the team through the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Spoelstra previously served as a lead assistant on Team USA’s gold medal-winning squad at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This appointment continues a recent pattern of rotating head coaches for Team USA, following Mike Krzyzewski in 2016, Gregg Popovich, and Steve Kerr. USA Basketball has developed an internal strategy of grooming assistant coaches to eventually step into the top role, and Spoelstra is the latest to follow this path.

Spoelstra brings a highly decorated resume to the position. He has guided the Miami Heat to six NBA Finals appearances, capturing two championships, and is the longest-tenured active head coach in the NBA. He ranks fifth in all-time playoff wins and holds the most victories in Heat franchise history.

Team USA’s men’s team captured gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating France 98-87, marking the fifth consecutive Olympic gold for the program and the 17th overall.

Looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics, the roster is likely to feature a mix of veteran stars and emerging talent. While Kevin Durant has not ruled out competing again, Stephen Curry has confirmed that Paris 2024 would be his last Olympics, and LeBron James will be 43 by Los Angeles 2028. Players such as Bam Adebayo, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Davis, and Devin Booker could return, while new talent like Paolo Banchero, Cade Cunningham, Chet Holmgren, and Cooper Flagg may also be added.

In parallel, USA Basketball has secured Duke coach Kara Lawson to lead the women’s national team through the 2028 Olympic cycle, ensuring continuity and leadership for both programs.
