The curtain has closed on one of Philippine cinema’s brightest stars. Nora Aunor, born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor, passed away on Wednesday night, April 16, 2025. She was 71.
Her son, Ian De Leon, broke the heartbreaking news on social media:
"She was the heart of our family — a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth. Her kindness, wisdom, and beautiful spirit touched everyone who knew her. She will be missed beyond words and remembered forever."
Soon after, her children—Matet, Lotlot, and Ken—shared their own heartfelt tributes, painting a picture of a woman who wasn’t just a legend, but a loving mother, too.
Lotlot De Leon wrote, “She was a star not only on screen, but in the hearts of many—and stars like hers never stop shining.”
Matet kept it simple but touching: “I love you mommy.”
Ken’s message was raw and emotional: “Ma, I love you so much! Thank you so much po sa lahat-lahat, because kung ‘di po dahil sa’yo, ‘di po ako andito. I know you're in good hands now with our Jesus Christ. You'll always be in our hearts forever. I love you sooo much!”
Born on May 21, 1953, Nora Aunor was more than just an actress—she was the Superstar. Over her career, she appeared in more than 170 films and earned numerous accolades both locally and internationally.
Her performance in Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos earned her top acting honors from Gawad Urian and FAMAS. She was inducted into the FAMAS Hall of Fame in 1992 and received the Film Academy of the Philippines’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.
From Bona to Himala, Bulaklak sa City Jail to The Flor Contemplacion Story, Aunor delivered unforgettable performances that helped define Philippine cinema. In 2022, she was honored as a National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts—a well-deserved recognition for a life dedicated to storytelling.
Just this February, she returned to the big screen in the horror film Mananambal. She was also supposed to run as the second nominee for the People’s Champ Guardians Party-list in the May 2025 elections, but later withdrew.
Nora Aunor may have taken her final bow, but her voice, her films, and her impact will echo through generations.
Truly, stars like hers never stop shining.
