With their backs firmly against the wall, TNT Tropang Giga summoned every ounce of grit and determination to keep their championship hopes alive, outlasting San Miguel Beer,86-78, in a tension-filled Game 5 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Faced with the threat of elimination, the Tropang Giga rose to the occasion with a resilient all-around performance that cut the Beermen’s series lead to 3-2 and forced a crucial Game 6, set for Friday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig.
Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser spearheaded TNT’s defiant stand with 18 points, leading a balanced effort where six players scored in double digits. It was a collective display of toughness from a shorthanded crew that simply refused to bow out.
“Tonight, I saw a lot of fight and just an unwillingness to give up,” said TNT coach Chot Reyes, whose team remained upbeat despite trailing for most of the series. “Our message before the game was simple: it’s been a long season, and now we’re down to the final week. Let’s make it our best.”
The win was not just about survival—it was historic. TNT is now set to play its 75th game of the season, tying Alaska’s long-standing record from 1995. Glenn Khobuntin, meanwhile, is on the brink of a milestone of his own as the only TNT player to appear in every game this season.
With Poy Erram still sidelined, TNT leaned on a tight nine-man rotation that delivered under pressure. Alongside Ganuelas-Rosser, Kelly Williams, Calvin Oftana, Jordan Heading, RR Pogoy, and Almond Vosotros all chipped in at least 11 points apiece.
Their effort on the defensive end was equally vital. TNT held San Miguel to just 11-of-46 shooting in the first half while converting 17 of their own 38 attempts. The Beermen mounted a rally, trimming a double-digit deficit down to three early in the fourth, but TNT didn’t flinch. Instead, they responded with a surge that extended the lead back to 18, effectively sealing the win.
Now with renewed momentum and another shot at keeping their grand slam dream alive, the Tropang Giga live to fight another day. Game 6 promises to be another hard-fought battle—with everything still to play for.
