Filmmaker Mike De Leon, Pillar Of Philippine Cinema, Dies At 78

MANILA, Philippines — August 28, 2025. The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) confirmed today the passing of acclaimed filmmaker Mike De Leon , one of the country’s most influential directors. He was 78.

De Leon, born in 1947, was the visionary behind some of the most iconic films in Philippine cinema. His works include Itim (1976), Kisapmata (1981), Batch ’81 (1982), Sister Stella L. (1984), and Citizen Jake (2018).

FDCP Chairman Jose Javier Reyes paid tribute to the filmmaker’s enduring impact:

“His life was dedicated to film. His consistent imagination to explore the language of cinema shaped what we understand of Philippine filmmaking today.”

Known for his fearless storytelling, De Leon’s films explored themes of power, oppression, and social justice, giving a voice to the marginalized and shedding light on uncomfortable truths. His work continues to influence generations of filmmakers and cinephiles.

The FDCP said the entire film industry joins in mourning his loss and honoring his legacy as a pioneer who redefined Philippine cinema.
