A fire broke out at the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bureau of Research and Standards (BRS) office in Quezon City on Wednesday afternoon, October 22, prompting an investigation by authorities.

The Office of the Ombudsman has ordered coordination with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to determine the cause of the blaze and to check if it was accidental or intentional.

In a statement, the DPWH clarified that “no documents related to the ongoing investigation into the flood control anomalies were in the Bureau of Research and Standards (BRS) building that caught fire in Quezon City today.”

Initial findings suggest that the fire began when a computer unit inside the Materials Testing Division suddenly exploded. The BFP said the blaze reached the third alarm before being declared under control around 1:34 p.m. Fortunately, no employees were injured.

The BRS serves as the research arm of the DPWH, handling studies, pilot testing, and the development of standards and policies for government infrastructure projects.

An investigation team has been deployed to assess the damage and identify the cause of the incident. “A thorough assessment is underway to determine the full extent of the damage and to prevent similar incidents in the future,” the DPWH said.

Authorities are expected to release more details once the ongoing probe is completed.
