Ginebra One Win Away From Glory: Brownlee, Thompson Lead Game 5 Comeback
Barangay Ginebra is knocking on the championship door. The Gin Kings finally broke the back-and-forth trend in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup finals, pulling off a clutch Game 5 win to take a crucial 3-2 series lead. And you can bet the 12,000-strong Ginebra faithful at the Smart Araneta Coliseum were loving every second of it!

The Kings locked down TNT Tropang Giga in the second half, holding them to just 21 points en route to a gritty 73-66 victory. Now, they’re just one win away from reclaiming the throne—their first since that unforgettable 2023 Commissioner’s Cup title run against Bay Area.

Brownlee, Thompson Take Over

For a moment, it looked like TNT was in control, leading 45-35 at halftime and stretching it to 47-37 early in the third. But Ginebra refused to back down. Maverick Ahanmisi sparked a crucial 10-0 run to tie the game at 47-all, setting the stage for a wild finish.

Then came the fourth quarter—crunch time. That’s when Justin Brownlee and Scottie Thompson took matters into their own hands. They outscored the entire TNT squad, 14-10, in the final period. And get this—TNT didn’t score a single point in the last 4 minutes and 25 seconds. The Kings’ defense was just that good.

With Ginebra trailing 65-66, Thompson knocked down back-to-back baskets before Brownlee sealed the deal with two straight clutch shots of his own. Game over. Series lead secured.

The Stats That Mattered

Brownlee, playing through an injured right thumb, still put up 18 points (16 in the first half), 14 rebounds, and 5 assists. Thompson recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards, while Ahanmisi and Japeth Aguilar chipped in 11 each. Jamie Malonzo added six points plus 10 rebounds for good measure.

For TNT, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Rey Nambatac both dropped 19 points, but it wasn’t enough to stop Ginebra’s late-game heroics.

Game 6: Do-or-Die for TNT

With two days to regroup, TNT will have to dig deep if they want to force a Game 7. But Ginebra? They’re smelling blood. Game 6 goes down on Wednesday at the same venue, and the Kings will be looking to finish the job.

Can they close it out, or will TNT fight back? One thing’s for sure—this series isn’t short on drama.
