Cebu woke up to another jolt early Monday morning after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook parts of the province and nearby areas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake hit 10 kilometers southwest of Bogo City at 1:06 a.m. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 5 kilometers.

Initially recorded as magnitude 6, the tremor was strong enough to rattle residents across Central Visayas.

According to Phivolcs, Intensity V shaking was felt in Bogo City, Daanbantayan, Medellin, San Remigio, Tabogon, and Tabuelan in Cebu; as well as in Villaba (Leyte) and Escalante City (Negros Occidental).

Intensity IV was reported in several key cities including Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Toledo, and Danao, while tremors reached Iloilo City, Roxas City (Capiz), and parts of Leyte and Negros.

Meanwhile, lighter shaking or Intensity III and II were experienced in parts of Bohol, Negros Oriental, Southern Leyte, and Albay.

No major damage has been reported so far, but Phivolcs warned that aftershocks are possible.

The early morning quake has once again reminded residents of the region’s vulnerability to strong seismic activity, following several tremors that have hit the Visayas in recent weeks.
