It was supposed to be a regular morning for voters in Barangay Sagap, Bangued, Abra. But around 9:14 AM, the peaceful rhythm of election day was shattered by the sound of gunshots. One person was wounded in the shooting incident, sparking panic and fear among locals who had just wanted to exercise their right to vote.
This act of violence has drawn swift condemnation from the community and human rights groups. The Cordillera Human Rights Alliance didn’t hold back, calling out the chilling effect the violence is having. According to reports, some voters in other parts of Abra have decided to stay home, too afraid to head to the polls.
“We strongly condemn the shooting incident,” one statement read. “We urge COMELEC, local authorities, and all political parties in Abra to take immediate steps to ensure peaceful, safe, and fair elections.”
Election-related violence has long been a concern in various regions of the Philippines, but every incident is still one too many. For the voters in Abra, this wasn’t just about politics — it became a matter of personal safety.
Local authorities are now being pressed to act quickly, not just to investigate the shooting, but to restore trust and safety in the voting process. With tensions high, all eyes are on Abra — and on how leaders will respond to protect the people’s right to vote without fear.
