Half of Filipinos believe former president Rodrigo Duterte should be held accountable for the deaths linked to his administration’s controversial war on drugs, according to the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.

The nationwide poll, conducted from September 24 to 30, 2025, asked 1,500 adult respondents about their views on the issue. The survey has a ±3 percent margin of error.

Results showed that 50 percent of Filipinos agreed Duterte should face accountability, while 32 percent disagreed. Another 15 percent were undecided, and 4 percent did not give an answer.

Support for accountability was highest in the Visayas (54%), followed by Metro Manila (53%), Balance Luzon (52%), and Mindanao (39%) — Duterte’s home region.

The survey results came just after the International Criminal Court (ICC) rejected Duterte’s request for interim release, keeping him in detention while proceedings continue.

In its ruling, the ICC said Duterte’s continued detention was necessary “to ensure his appearance at trial, prevent obstruction of justice, and stop the possible commission of further crimes.”

The latest SWS data reflect how Filipinos remain divided — but increasingly vocal — on whether the former president should finally be held to account for his bloody anti-drug campaign.
