Jamie Malonzo Sits Out Ginebra's Opener, Eyes Big Return Against San Miguel

Barangay Ginebra fans may have noticed a familiar face missing from their PBA Philippine Cup debut on Wednesday—and yes, that was Jamie Malonzo sitting out on the sidelines.
Coach Tim Cone shared that the high-flying 6-foot-7 Fil-Am wasn’t quite 100% yet, dealing with a knee issue that limited his time in practice leading up to their matchup against Terrafirma.
“Jamie just came off a knee problem so he only had a couple of practices. So we held him out,” Cone explained after the game.
The good news? Malonzo was actually ready to suit up if needed, but with Ginebra cruising to a comfortable 101-80 win over the Dyip, there was no reason to push it.
But the real test comes this Friday.
With a blockbuster clash against the San Miguel Beermen looming at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Cone hinted that having Malonzo back on the floor will be crucial—especially when you’re up against none other than June Mar Fajardo.
“We hope to get everybody back in time for San Miguel,” said Cone. “You know, June Mar is always the target. You’ve got to figure out how to handle him, how much you’re going to allow him to dominate the game, and then you’ve got to pick your poison with their shooters.”
Having Malonzo’s length and athleticism alongside Japeth Aguilar could make all the difference in Ginebra’s plan to contain the eight-time MVP and keep pace with a hungry San Miguel squad still licking its wounds from a close OT loss to Magnolia.
So while Ginebra got the job done without him in the opener, expect Malonzo to be a key piece when the lights shine brighter this Friday.
