Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy recently made a heartfelt journey to the mountains of Kalinga, where he received a traditional tattoo from none other than legendary mambabatok, Apo Whang-Od.

In a series of photos shared on his social media, Jo Koy proudly displayed the fresh batok—carefully inked by the 107-year-old cultural icon herself. The caption that accompanied the post was simple, but full of meaning: “I’ve been blessed by the legend. Mahal kita Apo Whang-Od.”

For many Filipinos and members of the diaspora, Apo Whang-Od represents not only the endurance of indigenous artistry, but also the spirit of Filipino heritage passed down through generations. Her hand-tapped tattoos are seen as both sacred and symbolic, rooted deeply in the traditions of the Butbut tribe in Buscalan.

Jo Koy, known for weaving his Filipino identity into his comedy, has long celebrated his roots. This recent encounter with Whang-Od seems to mark a deeply personal milestone—one that goes beyond celebrity and touches on legacy, culture, and pride.

Fans and fellow artists were quick to react, expressing admiration not only for the tattoo itself, but for what it represents: a full-circle moment for a proud Filipino returning to honor his ancestry.

As Jo Koy put it—“Mahal kita, Apo Whang-Od.” And in that moment, it wasn’t just a celebrity tribute. It was a son of the Philippines coming home.
