Jonathan Olazo Shines Light On Monet In 'Light Receptacle Cafe'

Filipino artist Jonathan Olazo pays homage to Impressionist master Claude Monet in his latest exhibit “Light Receptacle Café” — a poetic blend of light, time, and Filipino sensibility.

Opening last October 18 at the Alliance Française de Manille, the show reimagines Monet’s devotion to luminosity through Olazo’s layered acrylic and mixed-media works. Curated by his wife, Lyn Yusi-Olazo, the exhibit invites viewers to experience light as both subject and metaphor.

Known for his dynamic process, Olazo “paints like a DJ,” mixing visuals and emotions drawn from daily life. His pieces capture the fleeting beauty of moments — a theme deeply rooted in Impressionism but refreshed through a contemporary lens.

Art patrons praised the collection’s emotional depth. Otty Lumagui admired its balance of strength and delicacy, while AFM’s Olivier Dintinger said the works transported him back to Paris. Dr. Eric Zerrudo of the NCCA connected Olazo’s art to the history of Filipinos encountering Impressionism in the 19th century.

Influenced by French thinkers like Roland Barthes and Charles Baudelaire, Olazo finds poetry in Manila’s everyday scenes, mirroring Monet’s calm yet radiant energy.

“Light Receptacle Café” runs until November 15 at the Alliance Française de Manille, 209 Nicanor Garcia Street, Bel-Air II, Makati City.
