Kanlaon Erupts: Massive Ash Plume Rises 4km; Authorities Warn Of Pyroclastic Flows And Ashfall

Kanlaon Volcano woke up with a bang early this morning, April 8, 2025, erupting at 5:51 AM and sending a massive ash plume about 4,000 meters into the sky. The powerful blast is currently ongoing and has prompted PHIVOLCS to maintain Alert Level 3 over the volcano — which means there’s a high likelihood of more explosive activity.
Thick ash is now drifting southwest, and pyroclastic density currents — those fast-moving, superheated flows of gas and volcanic material — were seen racing down the southern slopes. These were detected using IP and thermal cameras that monitor the volcano round-the-clock.
In response, DOST-PHIVOLCS has been quick to act. They’re using Ash3D, a specialized computer model, to simulate where the ash could go. With data pulled from this morning’s eruption, including the 56-minute duration and the incredible height of the ash plume, the model is helping volcanologists and local authorities stay ahead of potential ashfall impacts.
Reports of ashfall have already come in from Barangays Cubay, San Miguel, and La Granja in La Carlota City. Fortunately, because most of the ash rose up to around 5 kilometers, the fallout was relatively minimal to the west — something the simulations also predicted.
PHIVOLCS emphasized that these simulations aren’t just for show. They provide real-time insights into ashfall thickness, spread, and cloud height, which help officials pinpoint the communities at risk and verify on-ground observations quickly and accurately.
For now, locals are being advised to stay indoors, keep masks handy, and follow updates from local government units and disaster response teams. If you’re in the area, keep your ears open — Kanlaon may not be done yet.
