Kanlaon Volcano Spews Ash In Short Eruption, Plume Rises 2,000 Meters
Screengrab from PHIVOLCS-DOST
Kanlaon Volcano came alive again Friday night, putting on a brief but dramatic show. From 8:05 p.m. to 8:08 p.m. on October 24, 2025, the volcano’s summit crater erupted, sending an ash plume soaring up to 2,000 meters high before drifting northwest, according to the Kanlaon monitoring station in Lower Masulog, Canlaon City.
Time-lapse footage from the observatory captured the short-lived explosion and the movement of the ash cloud. Pyroclastic density currents—or fast-moving clouds of hot gas and volcanic material—were also seen rolling down the volcano’s southern upper slopes, reaching about a kilometer from the crater.
Despite the eruption, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) is keeping Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon, which means the volcano is still showing moderate unrest. Residents and visitors are reminded to stay away from the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone due to possible sudden eruptions or rockfalls.
PHIVOLCS also noted that the plume drift direction has since been updated following the eruption.
Authorities continue to closely monitor Kanlaon’s activity as the volcano remains under watch.
