Keeping The Lights On-And Standing Guard: Meralco Joins Forces With AFP For Disaster Response And Nation-Building

In a move that blends power with patriotism, Meralco is teaming up with the Armed Forces of the Philippines Reserve Command (AFPRESCOM) to form its own military reservist unit—proving that nation-building isn’t just about keeping the lights on, but also about stepping up when the country needs it most.
The partnership, made official through a recently signed Memorandum of Agreement, establishes the Meralco AFP Affiliated Reserve Unit. This unit will be composed of Meralco employees who volunteer to become reservists, ready to lend their expertise in energy and infrastructure during national emergencies and disasters.
“This only means that the task in handling or addressing the national security issues of our country is not only in the hands of a few, but is a shared responsibility by all,” said AFPRESCOM Commander BGen. Ferdinand Geminic P. Ramirez at the MOA signing.
The idea is simple but powerful: when disaster strikes or emergencies arise, the country’s need for electricity—and the people who know how to restore it—is just as crucial as boots on the ground. Meralco’s workforce, armed with technical knowledge and a deep understanding of the power grid, will be a valuable force multiplier for the AFP in crisis scenarios.
The initiative was also lauded by Department of Energy Undersecretary (and fellow military reservist) Felix William Fuentebella, who called the partnership a “must” and praised Meralco for stepping up its role in ensuring energy security.
Meralco employees who join the reserve unit won’t just be contributing to national defense—they’ll be participating in emergency drills, helping safeguard vital power infrastructure, and supporting business continuity efforts during disasters.
“This partnership is about ensuring energy resilience whether in times of natural calamities or manmade challenges,” said Froilan J. Savet, Meralco’s First Vice President and Head of Networks.
Meralco EVP and COO Ronnie L. Aperocho emphasized that this is more than just a corporate initiative—it’s a commitment. “Rest assured that Meralco will not only keep the lights on, we stand ready to support the AFP and the Filipino people whenever we are needed.”
At its core, this collaboration reflects a bigger idea: that private companies and government institutions can—and should—work hand in hand to prepare for the unexpected. And in the face of climate change, natural disasters, and ever-evolving security challenges, partnerships like this remind us that nation-building is a team effort.
