Lav Diaz, one of the country’s most celebrated auteurs, is once again steering Philippine cinema onto the global stage. His latest film, Magellan, has been selected as the Philippines’ official submission to the 98th Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film category.

The announcement was made by Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) Director General Paolo Villaluna during the opening ceremony of the Philippine Film Industry Month 2025, organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

To help propel the film’s journey to Hollywood, the FDCP will extend a PHP 1 million grant to Diaz and his team under its Oscars Assistance Program. The support aims to bolster the campaign efforts needed to secure international visibility for the film as it vies for a place on the Academy’s shortlist.

With Magellan, Diaz continues his long-standing reputation for crafting deeply reflective cinema that challenges conventions while chronicling the country’s histories and struggles. Now, with the Oscars campaign ahead, Filipino audiences and the global film community alike will be watching closely as this cinematic voyage sets sail.
