It’s official: the Senate is gearing up for the historic impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte—and they’re dressing the part.

On Thursday, May 15, Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero gave the public a first look at one of the Oxford crimson robes that senators will wear once they take on the role of judges in the impeachment court.

Speaking to reporters, Escudero explained that the robe isn’t just for show. “It marks the transformation of senators—from lawmakers and representatives of the people to impartial magistrates seeking truth and justice,” he said.

The Senate is set to convene as an impeachment court once sessions resume in June, where the Rules of Procedure will also be laid out. Until then, preparations continue, with Escudero noting that everything is still subject to any possible ruling from the Supreme Court that might pause the proceedings.

For now, though, all eyes are on the Senate—and those striking crimson robes—as the nation prepares for what could be one of the biggest political events of the year.
