The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced it is in talks with Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the private operator of the LRT-1, after the company submitted an unsolicited proposal to complete the construction of the Unified Grand Central Station (UGCS).
According to Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan, LRMC's proposal would see the company take over as the contractor for the long-awaited project. The UGCS is a crucial transport hub that will link Metro Manila’s major railway lines—LRT-1, MRT-3, MRT-7, and the future Metro Manila Subway.
The move comes after the DOTr terminated the contract with the previous builder due to construction delays. With the new proposal from LRMC, the DOTr is optimistic about getting the project back on track and is working with the private partner to meet the target completion date.
