BOGO CITY, CEBU — Residents in Bogo City, Cebu experienced an early morning jolt this Friday when a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the area.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the tectonic quake occurred at 5:39 a.m. with its epicenter located 18 kilometers northeast of Bogo City at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs confirmed that this recent tremor is an aftershock of the magnitude 6.9 offshore Cebu earthquake that struck the region on September 30.
The shaking was widely felt across several provinces. Reported Intensity IV, which is a strong shaking, was experienced in Bogo City, Cebu, and the Leyte towns of Villaba, Tabango, and San Isidro.
Weaker shaking, or Intensity III, was reported in Tabuelan, Cebu, and Calubian and Palompon, Leyte. Intensity II was felt in Argao, Cebu.
Instrumental readings provided further measurement of the ground acceleration across the Visayas. Intensity IV was logged in Villaba, Leyte. Intensity III was recorded in Cebu City, Hilongos, and Ormoc City. Lower intensities were also measured in parts of Biliran, Bohol, Masbate, Negros Occidental, Northern Samar, and Southern Leyte.
Despite the widespread perception of the shaking, Phivolcs has indicated that no damage is expected from the magnitude 5.1 aftershock.
