President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday declared the revival of the Philippine shipbuilding industry as he led the inauguration of the HD Hyundai Shipyard in Subic, Zambales, reaffirming the country’s commitment to reclaim its place among the world’s leading shipbuilding nations.
In his speech, the President highlighted the importance of restoring the country’s global competitiveness in shipbuilding—once a key driver of economic growth and industrial development.
“Together with our partners, we are reviving shipbuilding in the country to strengthen industries, promote livelihood, and build a better, stronger future for the Philippines,” he said.
The Chief Executive recalled that between 2014 and 2018, the Philippines was producing as much as 2 million gross tons of ships annually before the sector slowed down in 2019. “Today, we raise the sails once more,” Marcos declared.
With Hyundai Heavy Industries’ renewed investment, the Subic shipyard will expand its capacity from 1.3 million to 2.5 million deadweight tons—enough to build up to eight large oil tankers a year. Marcos emphasized that this expansion signals the country’s intent to “begin reclaiming our rightful place among the world’s great shipbuilding nations.”
He also stressed that the industry’s revival rests not only on infrastructure but also on people. Government programs are being aligned to international standards, providing training in 16 technical disciplines ranging from marine electricity to advanced welding.
For the President, the relaunch is not just about reviving past achievements but ensuring sustainability for future generations. “Together, let us show the world that Filipinos have the skills, the vision to navigate the uncertain waters of an ever-changing world,” he said.
HD Hyundai’s operations in Subic will begin in January 2026 under a 10-year lease of 200 hectares from Agila Subic, a Cerberus portfolio company. The shipyard will focus on both vessel production and offshore wind platform construction, reflecting its role in the future of maritime and energy industries.
