President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday led the nation in remembering the victims of the tragic landfill incident in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City, which occurred on January 8.
Before proceeding with the naming and delivery ceremony of the world’s first methanol dual-fuel KAMSARMAX bulk carrier at the West Cebu Estate in Balamban, the President called for a moment of silence to honor those who lost their lives.
“Before we start, let us take a moment of silence for the victims of the landfill incident in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City, last January 08,” Marcos said.
As search and rescue operations continue, the President expressed his deepest sympathies to the families affected by the tragedy.
“We offer our prayers for the souls of the departed and strength to their grieving families,” he said.
President Marcos also assured the public that the government is taking the situation seriously, stressing its commitment to safety, transparency, and accountability.
“Please be assured that the government is taking all necessary measures to ensure safety, transparency, accountability, and compassionate assistance,” he added.
He further confirmed that the government is providing burial assistance and other forms of aid to the families of the victims. As of January 13, authorities have reported 13 fatalities, with 23 individuals still missing.
Calling for unity, the President urged Filipinos to support one another during this difficult period.
“Let us stand in solidarity with our fellow Filipinos during this difficult time,” Marcos said.
In response to the incident, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has issued an immediate cease-and-desist order against the operator of the Binaliw sanitary landfill. The agency also extended its condolences to the affected families and committed to a thorough, impartial, and evidence-based investigation to ensure accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
