The Philippines is officially taking the lead in the region — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has formally accepted the ASEAN chairship for 2026 from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, signaling the start of the country’s year-long leadership of the regional bloc.

During the handover ceremony on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Prime Minister Anwar expressed full confidence in Marcos’ ability to steer ASEAN forward.

“To my friend Bongbong, good luck,” Anwar said warmly. “Under your steady hand, ASEAN will continue to act with clarity, composure, and that warmth and poise for which the Filipino people are known.”

President Marcos, in turn, pledged to uphold ASEAN’s unity and continue its mission of regional cooperation and inclusivity.

“The Philippines will push for inclusive initiatives as chair and champion continuity — building upon the gains achieved in previous summits,” Marcos said.

As ASEAN chair for 2026, the Philippines will host major summits and meetings among Southeast Asian leaders, placing the country once again at the center of regional diplomacy and decision-making.

The transition marks a symbolic passing of trust between two neighboring nations — one that highlights friendship, stability, and a shared vision for a stronger ASEAN community.
