President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. welcomed the new ambassadors of Belgium and the United Kingdom in separate credential ceremonies at Malacañang Palace on Tuesday, Oct. 14, reaffirming the Philippines’ commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic ties with both European nations.
The President received Ambassador Vladislava Iordanova of Belgium and Ambassador Sarah Hulton of the UK, both of whom expressed enthusiasm about strengthening cooperation with Manila.
Marcos lauded the Philippines’ “warm and cordial” relations with Belgium, saying he hopes to further enhance collaboration not only between governments but also among their peoples.
“Our two countries have enjoyed a long time of friendly relations, which I hope will continue and strengthen at every level,” he said.
Ambassador Iordanova echoed the President’s sentiment, pledging to build on the nearly eight decades of partnership between the two countries, which began in 1946.
Meanwhile, in receiving the credentials of the UK’s new envoy, Marcos described Britain as a “steadfast partner” that has stood by the Philippines through the years.
“The relations between the UK and the Philippines have certainly stood the test of time and have grown stronger and deeper as the years go on,” the President said.
Ambassador Hulton, returning to the Philippines after nearly 20 years, expressed condolences for recent disaster victims and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to working with the Philippines on growth, climate, and security priorities.
Diplomatic ties between the Philippines and both the UK and Belgium were formally established on July 4, 1946—a friendship now poised to enter a new chapter.
