President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. welcomed United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC) in the Philippines, Arnaud Peral, in a courtesy call at Malacañan Palace on Thursday, reaffirming the country’s strong ties with the UN and its commitment to advancing shared development goals.
Peral, who officially assumed his post on February 5, 2025, met with the President to discuss ways to deepen collaboration between the Philippines and the UN in support of national development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His appointment was made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres earlier this month.
During the meeting, President Marcos underscored the Philippines’ enduring commitment to multilateralism, especially as the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary this year. The Philippines, one of the UN’s 51 founding members, has been an active partner in the organization’s initiatives since its establishment.
A native of France, Peral brings extensive experience to his new role. Before arriving in Manila, he served as UNRC in Tunisia since 2020 and has held leadership positions in Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, and Brazil under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
In the Philippines, the UN continues to support a broad range of initiatives—spanning from public-private partnership projects that expand access to clean water and renewable energy, to programs that strengthen food security, promote low-carbon industrial zones, and enhance women’s employment opportunities. The organization also plays a vital role in disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and in supporting small business owners—particularly women entrepreneurs—through innovative tools, including artificial intelligence platforms.
The courtesy call not only marked the start of Peral’s tenure but also reaffirmed the shared resolve of both parties to pursue a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future for the Filipino people.
